Embracing the Art of Computer-Free Music Production
In the realm of electronic music production, DAWless music making has become a popular method. But what exactly does it mean to go DAWless? Let’s dive into this creative approach that allows musicians to step away from their computer screens and engage with music in a more tactile and intuitive way.
The Essence of DAWless Music Making
DAWless, or Digital Audio Workstation-less, refers to the process of creating electronic music without the use of a computer-based DAW. Instead it relies on a group of interconnected hardware including samples, synthesizers and drum machines to compose and perform the music. It’s a throwback to the days before the digital revolution, where musicians interacted directly with their instruments, fostering a hands-on experience that many find liberating and inspiring. Often the resulting DAWless jams only exist in the moment, or maybe in the future could become parts of fuller formed tracks, or uploaded to youtube for posterity or edutainment.
Why Go DAWless?
The reasons for going DAWless are as varied as the artists themselves. For some, it’s about breaking free from the constraints of software and the distractions of a multi-purpose device like a computer or tablet. Others find that hardware encourages a different type of creativity, one that’s more focused and deliberate. Sometimes the tactile nature of knobs and faders can lead to “happy accidents” that would likely not occur when clicking a mouse. For example sometimes I accidentally overload a mixer channel or create a feedback loop with the Aux sends, creating a cool distortion effect. These sorts of things need be planned when using a computer.
The DAWless Setup
There is no right or wrong way to make a DAWless setup and it is oftern more of a journey than a destination. That said, a typical DAWless setup might include a groovebox to lay down beats and basslines, then a synthesizer for melodies and textures, and a sampler for adding unique sounds and effects. These devices are usually connected via MIDI, allowing them to communicate and synchronize with each other. The fun part of DAWless is this modularity. You can start with just 2 bits of gear, and then expand and grow your setup.
The Revival of Hardware
The DAWless movement has also been fueled by the resurgence of analog and digital hardware. Companies like Akai, Elektron, and Arturia have responded to the demand by creating new devices that combine the best of the old and the new. Roland is busy making cheaper and smaller reissues of their popular classics with their boutique series. Meanwhile behringer is democratising the synth world by bringing their replicas of Moog classics to the masses with low, low prices. (Albeit to the changrin of the synth purists perhaps)
Challenges and Considerations
Going DAWless isn’t without its challenges. Hardware can be expensive, and there’s a learning curve to understanding each piece of equipment. Additionally, while a DAWless setup can be more portable than a computer-based studio, it can also be bulkier and more complex to set up and tear down. However, for many, the benefits of engaging directly with the music far outweigh these concerns. My home studio is starting to get overun with gear, although once I figure there is something Im not really using for a few months, or is not bringing enough uniqueness to my setup that isnt already replicated by other gear, then it is easy enough to sell it on the used market, thus funding new gear and keeping the cycle alive!
Conclusion
DAWless music making is more than just a trend; it’s a statement about the relationship between artists and their tools. It’s a commitment to the craft of music making, an homage to the pioneers of electronic music, and a celebration of the joy that comes from hands-on creativity. Whether you’re a seasoned producer or a curious newcomer, exploring the world of DAWless could open up a whole new dimension in your musical journey. But just be prepared for the expense of both money and time that might come with it!
